EXTRACT: CH 34 Angel of Death

Davie checked his watch. 12:57. How long could he be without her? He held his breath and timed himself. Forty-five seconds. That was long, he thought. I will have to find new ways to pass the time, he chuckled. His new measurement on forever was simply his proximity to her. Now, he measured time only in her absence.

EXTRACT: Ch 14 : Davie & Leah Coffee and Cigarettes

She entered the room, casting a cat-like shadow on the wall. She looked taller than she was; and to Davie lying propped up on one arm, the mesmerising angel, standing in the light with the dancing faeries, had squashed his relentless search for meaning, and quelled his anger. Hate had suddenly transformed into the lack of love, war into the absence of peace. However, in her eyes, he saw her pain and her loneliness that she carried. Davie saw all of her.

Extract : Ch. 3 – David 1918 - 1940

Davie’s uninterrupted tears, traced down the side of his face, blurring his memories of the shiny tiles in the quiet hallway. His recollection of the pitter-patterning of the nurses' shoes and their fretful faces merged with the worried eyes of the doctor, unhinging his faith. The morning greeted the pair with a doctor emerging down the hall, removing his surgical mask and shaking his head. Davie knew, from then on when the sun rose, his walk through the fields, past the tree beneath her window, over the fence and back along the dust path to his farm, was going to be a very long one.
