Lietukis garage

During the night between the 25th and the 26th of June, the Lithuanian nationalists waged a horrific pogrom in Slobodka, a suburb of Kaunas, where many Jews lived for generations and which had many famous Yeshivas. On that single night, 800 Jews were murdered in the most brutal ways, and among them were Rabbi Shlomo-Zalman Ostrovski and Rabbi Shraga Hurvitz. 52 Jews who were caught in the street were ripped apart by the Lithuanians in the Lietukis garage, on Vytautas street; other Lithuanians watched the scene with pleasure. The commander of the Lithuanian forces in Kaunas published a warning that for every single killed German, 100 Jews will be put to death.

The young man on the right took all of an hour in front of the crowd gathered at Lietukis garage to bludgeon to death the 52 Jewish men.
Afterward he stood atop the bodies and played the Lithuanian anthem on his accordian while the crowd sang ...

Lithuania,our homeland,

Land ofheroes!

Let yoursons draw their strength

From ourpast experience …

EXTRACT : Americano

“Do you know what it means?” asked the Nazi. “Do you?” His eyes were wider now.“Do you?”

Ravi folded the paper and slipped it back into its envelope. He looked up at Kurt and nodded. “Yes.”

“Can you tell me?” Kurt asked.

Ravi chuckled. He stared at the fear behind the scarred eye – transfixed. It was fear long-lived.

“Please tell me ...” pleaded Kurt. “I have to know … what does it say?

“No,” said Ravi gently. “It's not for you.” He smiled.

Kurt begged. “No … Please … No … I have to know … Please …”

Eytan spoke again. “Ravi?”

This time Ravi nodded. A single silenced dull shot thudded. No echo. When the end comes, it comes quickly. Torment unravelled. Torment obstructed. Torment silenced.

My First Mass Murder

“What the hell is going on?” asked Davie, his eyes wide open.
Leah had no words.
“Why are they shooting women and children?” he asked, peering through the leaves to double-check his eyes. “Are they shooting women and children?” he demanded.
“Shhh,” said Leah, putting her hand on his shoulder.
“I can’t be quiet … don’t tell me to be quiet,” he said shrugging her off. “Who are those guys? Nazis?”
“No,” answered Leah. “They are …”
“Who?” asked Davie firmly. “Who are they? Gestapo? Russians? What?”
“The men with the white armbands … they’re the Ypatingas Burys,” replied Leah.

EXTRACT: Ch 38 : Ravi Escape

Ravi stared out at the Mother City and its array of flickering lights. He recognised his reflection in the window, but he didn’t recognise himself. He had mourned for his father, but he had never mourned the loss of his previous self. He never knew why he called himself the Angel of Death to the Nazi. He had never called himself that before. He didn’t know why he had the feeling of déjà vu. Perhaps it was a consequence of the trauma of surviving the unexploded grenade, or the waiting while he lay on top of it, or whether it was something bigger that he just didn’t understand. What he did know, was that there was no such thing as a coincidence and now more than ever he couldn’t stop his heart from missing Shanti.
