EXTRACT: CH 12 Crashes & Landings

The trench was half filled with soil and protruding limbs.Sara knelt beside her girls, smiling bravely. Leah thought she heard herwhisper, “Don’t worry mein bubbies,” as she unbuttoned their jackets. They didn’t protest, if their mother wasn’t afraid why should they? They satdown and she took of their shoes. An SS soldier whisked them away to a group ofchildren that had already  beenseparated. Another uniformed man held a motion camera to his eye. He’sfilming this. Sara held her cloth tight against her eyes. The taller of thetwo girls ran back to her, but a crack rang out. It wasn’t a gunshot, it was awhip. She stopped, afraid to move. A white arm-banded guard grabbed her hairand marched her back. She saw the two little girls holding hands, but stillcouldn’t remember their names.  Anotherguard counted ten children into a smaller group and marched them to the pit. They stood on the edge – naked – facing a machine gun nest.
